Don’t Miss the Holiday Yard Sales
With this coming Fri/Sat/Sun being Fourth of July weekend, yard sales will be popping up all over the city. Jamaica Plain is sure to have many but to find out about yard sales in your neighborhood check online at Craigslist or the classifieds in the newspaper.
Here are a couple things I always look for at yard sales:
Records: Besides enjoying the greatest music quality, records are the absolute BEST wall art and always affordable. Expect to pay anywhere from 50 cents to $5 for the record and $10 for the frame. You can buy the 12×12 LP frames at Target.
Books: Old books are so versatile. The more color your bookshelf has the better. Plus, older books always have interesting covers, which you can frame. I found this “Love Story” book for 50 cents and plan to frame the cute cover.
Lamps/Lampshades: I have bought a number of lamps at yard sales and have repainted them to match my decor.
Piggy banks: I don’t know what it is about those little banks but they always end up out on the lawn. More the reason to give the lil piggies a fresh coat of paint and a new home.
Mirrors and Picture Frames: Both, like art, are normally staples at yard sales. Most of the time the seller will sell the picture frame without the art (unless it is professionally matted and sealed) leaving you with a great frame to refinish and make your own.
Photographs: I never understand why people sell their family photos but you do see it from time to time. I have been collecting old photos for a year and now have a whole wall of b&w photos of people with their dogs.
Glassware: Whether it is an interesting candy dish, a ring holder or a set of wine glasses, keep your eye out for nice colorful glassware. I scored 4 red goblets for 1 dollar once.
regeneration: HUGE sale
Sadly I found out today that one of the best shops in Roslindale Square is closing in a couple weeks. Until the store closes, everything will be 30 to 50 percent off. The store is awesome because it features used and new items. The good news is the owner will continue to sell her screenprints among other items on her Etsy store. Check out the Featured Stores tab to see what vintage finds I discovered.
